Nottu Swaram Book

“Nottu Swaram” (or “Nottuswaram”) refers to a unique set of simple Carnatic compositions that incorporate Western-style melodies while using Indian Sanskrit or Tamil lyrics. These are especially known for their use of Western major scales and were composed primarily by Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the Carnatic music trinity.

What Makes Nottu Swaram Special?

  • Scale: They are set in the Shankarabharanam scale (equivalent to the Western major scale, or C major).

  • Structure: Short, simple, and catchy—ideal for beginners.

  • Fusion: They reflect early Indo-Western fusion, inspired by European band music during British colonial times.

  • Lyrics: Typically devotional, composed in Sanskrit or Tamil.
