Music Enrichment Program For Kids

A Montessori-inspired program for early childhood development

When you explore music like colors and legos with the little minds, music becomes part of who they become and a wonderful tool to express themselves!

Weekly Enrichment Through The Lens of Indian Classical Music - Fall 2026 Program at Morning Star Montessori, Snoqualmie, WA.

We are thrilled to partner with Morning Star Montessori School in the wonderful Snoqualmie Valley, to bring a beautifully designed music enrichment program to the kids. They get introduced to the  foundational elements of music through singing, movement, rhythm, listening activities, creative play and musical games. We use Indian Classical Music as a vehicle to do that.

Why Indian Classical Music?

Every musical tradition has developed its own vocabulary and methods for teaching.

● Ballet uses French terminology.

● Western classical music uses Italian terms such as Allegro , Forte , and Crescendo .

● Martial arts often preserve Japanese or Korean terminology.

● Yoga is practiced worldwide while retaining Sanskrit names for postures.

● Meditation techniques with origins in Asia are now widely used in schools, healthcare, and workplaces because of their broadly recognized benefits.

Similarly, Indian Classical Music uses the syllables Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni to represent the seven musical notes. These syllables function simply as a musical language for teaching pitch relationships and listening skills. Their use preserves the integrity of the educational method while supporting musical learning that is accessible to children from all backgrounds. The focus of this program is on music education—not cultural instruction or religious practice.

Why Music Matters in Early Childhood?

A growing body of educational and developmental research suggests that high-quality music experiences can support many aspects of children’s development, including:

Increased Attention Span, Ability To Focus

Emotional Expression and Confidence

Language and Listening Skills

Working memory and Executive Functions

Coordination and Motor Skills

Social Interaction and Team Spirit

The goal of this program is not early musical specialization, but rather to provide meaningful musical experiences that nurture the whole child.

A TYPICAL CLASS

What Children Will Explore

Melody & Musical Notes

Children will discover the seven basic musical notes through songs, echo games, playful listening activities.

Just as young children first learn to recognize primary colors before distinguishing many shades, they can gradually develop an ear for different musical pitches. Over time, they begin to hear, recognize, and reproduce these musical “colors” with increasing confidence.

Developmental benefits – Strengthens auditory discrimination, listening and memory skills, support language development, vocal confidence.

Feeling the Beat

Through clapping games, body percussion, movement, simple instruments, and songs, children experience what it means to keep a steady beat and explore different tempos and rhythmic patterns. Rather than counting mechanically, rhythm is experienced with the whole body. Activities introduce steady beat, tempo (fast and slow), and simple rhythmic patterns built around groups of three and four.

Developmental Benefits: As children move and play together, they develop attention and focus, coordination, executive functioning, motor planning, sequencing skills, collaboration, and confidence participating within a group.

Becoming Little Music Creators

Children are encouraged to experiment with musical ideas using the notes and rhythms they have already explored. They might invent a short melody, answer a musical question with their own tune, create rhythmic patterns together, or add sounds to a story. These playful experiences help children see themselves not only as learners of music, but also as creators.

Developmental Benefits: Creative musical exploration nurtures imagination, creativity, problem-solving, flexible thinking, self-confidence, and joyful engagement in learning.

Breath, Voice & Calm Attention

Each class includes gentle breathing, vocal warm-ups, and focused listening activities that help children become more aware of their breath and voice. These moments encourage children to slow down, listen carefully, and develop healthy vocal habits while creating a calm transition into musical exploration.

Developmental Benefits: These practices encourage breath awareness, vocal clarity, sustained attention, self-regulation, body awareness, and overall emotional well-being.

Exploring Musical Moods Through Ragas

Children receive a playful introduction to the idea of a raga —a unique combination of musical notes that gives a melody its own character. Children experience different ragas through listening, storytelling, drawing, and imaginative play.

Developmental Benefits: These experiences foster emotional awareness and expression, imagination, creative thinking, active listening, empathy through shared experiences, confidence in expressing feelings.

How Learning Grows Throughout the Quarter

The curriculum unfolds gradually over the course of the term.

Children first become comfortable using their voices and exploring steady beat through games and movement. As their confidence grows, they begin recognizing simple melodic patterns, experimenting with rhythms, creating their own musical ideas, and eventually exploring how different melodies can inspire different moods, stories, colors, and artistic expression.

Each new experience builds naturally upon previous discoveries while allowing children to revisit familiar activities with increasing confidence and independence.

There are no tests, auditions, or performance expectations.

Children’s growth is observed through their increasing willingness to participate, listen carefully, experiment with musical ideas, express themselves confidently, and engage joyfully with others. Every child progresses at their own pace, and curiosity is valued as much as accomplishment.

Let’s bring music into our lifestyle rather than wait for a mental ailment to remind us of the efficacy of it.
